Education

Cheder (Religion School)

Cheder kids

The Cheder meets fortnightly on Saturday afternoons, in very attractive premises in Marchmont, but currently online via Zoom.

We have enthusiastic teachers in Mor Kandlik-Eltanani and Gila Holliman (Joint Heads of Cheder) assisted by Rebecca Wober, Katy Bromberg, Carmen McPherson, Yael Budd and George Wilkes.

Children can attend from age 5 upwards - we have five classes.

Details of forthcoming sessions can be found at our Cheder page.

In May 2019 we agreed a safeguarding policy which can be accessed here.

Tea and Talmud

During his visits Rabbi Mark holds meetings to discuss Talmud or other sources in members’ homes or at one of our venues.  Topics range widely and often lead to animated discussions. Times and places vary according to his other commitments during his visit.

Currently these meetings are being held online via Zoom.

See forthcoming dates on our diary page.

Library - coming soon we hope.

We now have a collection of Jewish children’s books and teaching materials which may be borrowed by members. We hope to expand this collection into a library of both adult and children’s books which may be borrowed by members. Lisa Barcan is acting as librarian to organise this.

Philosophy group

Since September 2009 Rabbi Mark has been leading a group which reads and discusses texts of various kinds, broadly philosophical.

We began with a long exploration of the works of Spinoza, but since then we have briefly studied Kabbalah and the work of Maimonides, we've read the book Radical Judaism by Arthur Green, and we're currently working through Liberal Judaism's consultation exercise on the contents of a new siddur (prayer book).

Anyone is welcome to join this group which usually meets on Sunday afternoons (see diary for forthcoming dates). The Spinoza texts we discussed can be found on the resources page.

Currently these discussions are being held online via Zoom.

Hebrew tuition

One of our members has been taking groups of adults for Biblical Hebrew tuition at various levels. If you are interested in this please approach any of the Council members or send us a message and we will make contact for you.
