A personal message from Mazal Bisawer the new CEO of the AEJ:
Dear friends and partners,
It is with great honor and a deep sense of responsibility that I return to the Association of Ethiopian Jews – this time as CEO.
Since 2015, I have been engaged in social, civic, and political work in Israel, driven by a commitment to advancing social justice, combating discrimination, and promoting a deep and ongoing public conversation about racism. Over the years, I have come to know the Association well – a central and influential actor in Israel’s civil society, working tirelessly for equality and justice for Ethiopian Israelis.
In 2019, I joined the Association as its spokesperson and later served as Acting CEO. That period – marked by significant public protests, including the Solomon Teka demonstrations – was a pivotal moment for me, both professionally and personally. The intense and strategic work required of us during that time shaped my understanding of leadership and deepened my commitment to the cause.
Since then, I have worked across various fields – including education, culture, grassroots organizing, and community development. These experiences gave me a comprehensive view of the structural barriers and institutional blind spots facing many Ethiopian Israelis, as well as insight into the strengths and limitations of both public institutions and civil society organizations.
I return to the Association with a profound sense of mission, eager to lead the organization into its next chapter while staying true to its vision: promoting equality, fair representation, and justice for Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
In light of the ongoing changes in both the national and global arenas, the work of the Association is more vital than ever. We have a critical role to play in shaping a more democratic, equal, and inclusive Israeli society – and we must continue to claim that space with strength and clarity.
I am grateful for the trust placed in me and look forward to working in close partnership with all of you – within the community and across civil society.
Warm regards,
Mazal
CEO, Association of Ethiopian Jews
