Our community had its origins in 1997, as an Edinburgh group affiliated to the Glasgow New Synagogue (GNS). Going back 30 years before that, members of GNS from Edinburgh had held Erev SHabbat services in each others' homes.  Then in 2014 we became a separate community and affiliated to the national movement Liberal Judaism, becoming Sukkat Shalom, Edinburgh Libreal Jewish Community.  Treasurer's report for financial year  2016/17

 

Sukkat Shalom is run by a Council (Membership) which meets regularly and is open to all Members.  The constitution specifies three officials (Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary) and a Council of up to fifteen members.  The Council delegates much of its work to sub-committees, which can enlist the help of Community Members not on the Council.  This allows us maximum flexibility to devolve the running of the Community to its Members and to appoint others to take on responsibilities not listed in the Constitution. Much of Sukkot Shalom’s business is conducted by its members in this way. In particular, the Religious Affairs Committee organises our services.  Other current (2012) sub-committees are Membership, Newsletter, Security, Social Action, Community Liaison/Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, Cheder, Premises, Young People, Burials and Interfaith Liaison.

We became  a Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation in 2012. This does not change our day to day position, but it has several advantages in terms of our legal status.  Our application has been successful and our constitution, originally agreed in 2004 and most recently amended in 2012 can be accessed here or can be obtained from our secretary.

In May 2018 we reviewed our procedures for holding personal data to ensure that we were compliant with the new General Data Protection legislation. We agreed our privacy policy that you can access here.
